The algarve in Portugal is a poplar tourist destination that caters for many different types of holiday goers some areas of it however have been vastly over developed the most prominant of which would be Albeferia

This is a triumph for money makers over common sense and in so heavily developing the area they have killed off many who might have travelled there. However many still choose to visit although not to this area.

Many holiday goers to the Algarve are attracted for the golf there down to great backdrops and almost guaranteed good weather. This has meant that the price of golf has soared attracting only the best off to play golf as three rounds in quinta da lago can cost inbetween 205 euros to 265 euros depending on what courses are played.

These people also enjoy the luxuries of life and at Villamourer one of the main ports of the Algarve shows the money and boats that many holiday makers own.

Two final attractions of the algarve at the beach are the beaches themselves and the watersports that are possible there

Although many of the beaches can be crowded it is only a question of knowing the beach and once getting there being prepared to walk if you want a secluded spot many of these beaches and lakes nearby have facilities for water sports.

This gives something for tourists to do and attracts people to the area.

To conclude people are attracted to the algarve region for many good reasosns including beaches, crazy golf and watersports. The area however has sufered form over development in some areas like Albeferia.

Diani Beach is a major beach resort which lies on the Indian ocean coast of Kenya. It is 35km south of Mombasa. Diani Beach merges with a small town of Ukanda. Diani Beach is also 487km southwest of the capital Nairobi. Its also very closely located to Shimba Hills National Researve.

The area is known for its coral reefs, Black and white monkeys and long coastine which is 25km, or 16 miles, long. The area has high class restaurants and 2 shopping centres.

Diani Beach is also home to a vast amount of wildlife. Diani has the highest amount of the Angolan Colobus in Kenya. The coastal coral-rag forest in which the colobus live is now being largely degraded and over 75% of it has been destroyed in the last 20 years.

However with the amazing resorts and beautiful beaches Diani is suffering major problems.

Development along the south Kenyan coast (mainly for the tourist industry) has been a serious problem to the environment and a threat to biodiversity and the local people. There are 4 major threats:

1) Habitat loss: estimated over 75% of Diani’s forests have been lost to development in the last 25 years. The remaining areas of the forests are isolated.

2) Vehicle issues: A road has been built parallel to the beach. This however cuts through the remaining areas of the forests which separates animal habitats. This also causes problems of cars running over the animals.

3) Electric power cables: The main lines were uninsulated leaving 22,000 volts without protection for animals. This means that it could instantly kill any animal that touches it.

4)Illegal Snaring: This problem has been a recurring one in the Diani forest as people snare for bush meat.

Happisburgh is a small village located in the english county of Norfolk. It is situated off the B1159 with good transport routes. In the past, many people were attracted to the small rural seaside town and the town itself thrived on toursits and geographers. Within the last 50years, the small town of Happisburgh has seen many houses dissapear from the coastal area and this is due to erosion. Now, due to this rapid erosion, the town is dissapearing and tourists are bleak. The wooden revetments once there are now dilapidated and fallen. All sea defences are now broken due to the strong wave power and lack of management from the local government and council. Finally, with little or no management, the waters are able to hit the cliff which is made of soft clay at the bottom and so the waters, therefore erode the bottom of the cliff leading to the cliffs retreating back. It is now thought that by 2030, Happisburgh may be lost to the sea as already, many homes have been lost whilst one ladys house has been valued at only £1!

Swanage is a small coastal town in the south east of Dorset, England. It is situated at the eastern end of the Isle of Purbeck, approximately 10 km south of Poole and 40 km east of Dorchester. The town has a population of 10,124 (2001). It is a popular tourist resort, this being the town’s primary industry, with many thousands of visitors coming to the town during the peak summer season, drawn by the bay’s sandy beaches and other attractions. The town is located at the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site. The bay is east facing and is situated at the eastern end of the Isle of Purbeck, approximately 10 km south of Poole and 40 km east of Dorchester. The northern headland is formed of chalk, the southern of Purbeck Limestone, with softer primarily Wealdon clays forming the bay and valley in which the town is sited. The Purbeck limestone was extensively quarried with several sites to the south west showing evidence of former quarries, particularly Tilly Whim Caves and Dancing Ledge, a man made rock shelf used for loading ships. Nearby are Ballard Down, Old Harry Rocks, with Studland Bay to the north and Durlston Country Park to the south. Natural erosion has for med stacks along and at the end of the northern headland, in particular the notable Old Harry Rocks. In part through the process of quarrying, fossils from the dinosaur age have been discovered in the local rock, and as such the coastline up to and including Swanage Bay has been included in the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. During the peak summer season many people are drawn by the town’s beautiful setting, the beach and other attractions. The town has a large number of hotels and guest rooms though the number (particularly of hotels) has reduced slightly in recent years. Swanage has a gently sloping white sand beach which is sheltered and generally calm. The beach is well served by local businesses providing refreshments and services. For example, there are ice cream outlets, fish restaurants, Cafes. For hire are deck chairs, boats, pedalos and general watersports equipment. There are amusement arcades and parks too.

Besides the beach, there are other attractions including the restored Swanage steam railway and the Victorian pier. The town may also be used a base from which to visit other nearby areas of interest, such as Corfe Castle.

A proposal to fill up an eroding Purbeck beach with sand that is expected to cost £500,000 is a waste of money according to Purbeck Marine Wildlife.

Swanage beach is about to totally disappear due to erosion and according to Purbeck District Council engineer Mike Goater, 50 per cent of the beach has disappeared already.

As part of the shoreline management process for the Poole Bay and harbour area, a proposed £500,000 idea to put the sand back on Swanage beach has been mooted. However, the £500,000 proposal will only last for about ten years

DIANI BEACH

Diani Beach is a major beach resort which lies on the Indian Coast of Kenya, 30km south of Mombasa. It is located along a beautiful white-sanded beach (25km long), and merges with the small town of Ukunda which is home to a small airstrip. The area is well known for its biodiversity and coral reefs, the Shimba Hills National Reserve and the black-and-white colobus monkeys.

The Republic of Kenya is in East Africa and is bordered by Tanzania, Uganda, Sudan Ethiopia, Somalia and the Indian Ocean. Nairobi is the capital city, while the main port is Mombasa.

Kenya has a varied natural environment, with coral reefs along the coastline, tropical rainforests, savannah, semi-desert and mountains with alpine regions.

Diani beach is the area’s major attraction, as it is an idyllic scene with long, white and soft sand, which is a classic tropical image. The not only offers offshore reefs with exciting snorkelling and diving experiences, but also keeps waves at bay, and swimming close to shore is a popular pastime. It also provides the beach with perfect conditions for windsurfing. However, there are some drawbacks, as the seaweed gets washed up from time to time by the tides (which cover most of the sand at high tide).

As one of Kenya’s premier Indian Ocean resorts, it has a large and still-growing variety of hotels and restaurants. These businesses benefit even more from the warm seas and beautiful coral reefs, as it is also one of the best places to get close to the richly diverse marine life of the southern Kenyan coast, by snorkeling, scuba-diving or joining a boat safari.

The resort hotels are spread out along the 8km stretch of coast, and are mainly aimed at package holidaymakers, who sometimes combine their visit with an inland game park safari. Prices are often moderate to high, so it is a very expensive holiday, so it is difficult for budget travelers to be able to afford.

It is also possible to take a cruise along the shoreline in a dhow (a traditional boat). A popular place to visit while on this trip is Kisite Marine National Park near the Tanzanian border, which offers outstanding snorkelling. There are also a few sip wrecks which are great for scuba divers, who get opportunities to see turtles, manta rays and barracuda among many other marine species, including whale sharks. These huge animals patrol the coastline between January and March, so tourists can get the chance to see, or even snorkel alongside one by going on a whale shark safari. There are also guided walks through local villages to learn about their culture.

The Gold Coast is a city and local government area in the southeast corner of Queensland, Australia. It is the sixth most populous city in the country. Gold Coast City is renowned for its sunny subtropical climate, popular surfing beaches, expansive waterway and canal systems, a skyline dominated by high-rise apartment buildings, a peaceful rainforest hinterland in the west of the city, active nightlife and its wide variety of tourist attractions.

south of Brisbane, the state capital. It is separated from Logan City, a suburban area of Brisbane by the Albert River. Tweed Heads and some immediately adjacent areas of the Scenic Rim Regional Council are commonly considered parts of the greater Gold Coast area and are counted as such by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The city consists of 57 kilometres of coastline with some of the most popular surf breaks in Australia and the world including, The Spit, Main Beach, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Mermaid Beach, and Froggies Beach. Duranbah beach is one of the world’s best known surfing beaches and is often thought of as being part of Gold Coast City.

While the beaches are beautiful, there are also inherent dangers, and the Gold Coast has Australia’s largest professional surf lifesaving service to protect people on the beaches and to promote surf safety throughout the community.

The Queensland Department of Primary Industries carries out the Queensland Shark Control Program (SCP) to protect swimmers from sharks. Sharks are caught by using nets and baited drumlines off the major swimming beaches. Even with the SCP, sharks do range within sight of the patrolled beaches.

Gold Coast beaches have experienced periods of severe beach erosion. In 1967, a series of 11 cyclones removed most of the sand from Gold Coast beaches. The Gold Coast City Council committed to completing a review of beach management practices. The Gold Coast Shoreline Management Plan will be delivered by a range of organisations including the EPA, Gold Coast City Council and the Griffith Centre for Coastal Management.

Gold Coast City Council is also investing into the quality and capacity of the Gold Coast Oceanway that provides sustainable transport along Gold Coast beaches.

Around 10 million tourists visit the Gold Coast every year; comprising of 849,114 international visitors, 3,468,000 domestic overnight visitors and 5,366,000 daytrip visitors.

Tourism is Gold Coast City’s main industry, generating total revenue of $2.5 billion per annum. Gold Coast is the most popular Queensland tourism location. It is Australia’s 5th most visited destination in Australia by international tourists. It has over 13,000 available guest rooms contributing over $335 million to the local economy each year. Accommodation options available range from backpacker hostels to five star resorts and hotels.

Major tourist attractions include internationally renowned surf beaches, and theme parks including, Dreamworld, Sea World, Wet’n'Wild Water World, Warner Bros, Movie World and WhiteWater World.

With swaying palms and soft, white sand caressed by glittering, turquoise water, Diani Beach has many of the ingredients of the perfect tropical holiday destination. It is deservedly popular, and as one of Kenya’s premier Indian Ocean resorts, it has a large and still-growing assortment of hotels and restaurants, some of them extremely luxurious by local and often international standards. Thanks to warm seas and beautiful coral reefs it is also one of the best places to get close to the richly diverse marine life of the southern Kenyan coast, by snorkelling, scuba-diving or joining a boat safari.

The resort hotels strung out along this 8km (5-mile) stretch of coast are primarily aimed at package holidaymakers, who often combine their visit with an inland game park safari. Prices range from moderate to high, with very few options for budget travellers. It is perhaps no surprise that the European visitors who take holidays here tend to be well heeled.

Diani Beach lies on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast, 35km (22 miles) south of the nearest city, Mombasa, which is in turn 487km (303 miles) southwest of the capital, Nairobi. Its location along a stunning white sand beach, which skirts the shore for an impressive 25km (16 miles) has cemented its position as one of Kenya’s premier resorts.

The beach is the area’s major attraction – long, soft, white and lovely, it comes close to the tropical ideal. The offshore reef offers rewarding snorkelling; it also keeps waves at bay, making paddling and swimming close to shore a pleasure, and providing perfect conditions for windsurfing lessons. The only drawbacks are the seaweed that gets washed up from time to time, the tides which, at their highest, cover much of the sand, and the hustlers (known locally as beach boys) who can be hard to shake off.

-Tourism

-Agriculture

-Food Processing

-Light/Medium Industry

Vendee today is a popular tourist destination with more than 100 miles of sandy beaches edged with dunes and pine woods and a very mild climate. There is also many, Abbeys Churches and Museums along with marked footpaths, a coastal signposted bicycle route. Fishing is also popular in the sea or rivers and lakes.

Boscombe, near Bournemouth in Dorset had recently been regenerated to have one of only 5 in the worlds artificial surf reefs.

Although Bournemouth is a holiday destination known to be good for elderly visitors, the regeneration of the Boscombe suburb of Bournemouth, 15 minutes walk or a 5 minute beachside train down the coastline, will attract a new variety of tourists.

The surf reef is around the size of a football pitch and is 220m offshore (shown below right). The idea of the surf reef is to push the existing waves upwards and shape them into more surfable ones (example picture below left). This then increases the amount of surfable waves and the consitency of them to.

With the new surf reef, the beachside area has been regenerated too. There are new surf schools and surf shops built within The Overstrand complex which is the centre of the rows of new beach huts or appartments along the coastline. All of which have been updated from old wooden huts.

As far as beach management, all along the coast around Bournemouth (including Boscombe) there are groynes to control longshore drift (shown below with Bournemouth pier in the background).

It is at the very bottom on the south east coast of Spain .Costa del sol is known for beautiful scenery and an unspoilt beach with a golden abundance. IT has a mountainous view behind the coast with pretty Spanish villages near by. There are lots of old monuments such as church of santa ana built in the 16th century. It is such a religious place there are many churches to visit with a traditional feel. The weather often brings people in as in the summer months it rarely goes below 30 Celsius and sunshine for 320 days a year with limited rain fall due to the mountains.

In the 1940s was when tourism started in the area attracting native Spaniards. Yet in the 60s the first connection of flights and terminal was built giving the place a newfound industry with farmers and fishermen turning in to hoteliers. Torremolines was the first resort to open being a pioneer for the coast attracting tourist. Most of the resorts have been modernised with old Fishermans quarters being turned in to shops and restaurants. This town contrasts with others with a slower way of life which people find good for day trips these unique villages are being preserved with laws to white wash the buildings and do general repairs before summer.

Cheap flights from European cities and it is relatively affordable so that attracts people. This is due to residential tourism and the tourists from other European countries. However the identity and traditions of the people that live here are still very much alive with many festivals taking place throughout the calendar, some of which are a real spectacle and well worth a look. The cuisine is another major bonus, with affordable good food available everywhere, alongside the middle to high end restaurants. there are also lots of modern shops ranging from souvenirs, local goods and handicrafts, to designer label fashion and modern shopping centres. This is just some of the ways the place has adapted to become more tourist friendly with attractions such as zoos and marine parks to attract families as well as such luxury entertainment such as golf.
